All the family are invited once again to a POD Family Picnic 10.00am - 2.00pm at ANZAC Park, Dean Street, Toowong. A relaxed gathering where children who are deaf or have any degree or type of hearing loss plus their siblings and parents can meet up and have some fun. New families are especially welcome. Deaf parents with hearing (and deaf) children are also welcome.
Our mission is to strengthen and support each other in raising our children to reach their full potential, whatever and however that may be.
Raising a child who is deaf or hard of hearing provides unique challenges and rewards, and it can be helpful to connect with other parents who can relate to our experiences. Even though we each have different stories to tell, our common bond is wanting the best for our children.
POD QLD welcomes families using every different communication method - speaking, signing or combining. We believe that “what works for your child and family is what makes your choice right” (Hands and Voices Motto, 2005). POD is accepting of all cultures and beliefs. At POD social gatherings and workshops, families can meet in a safe, confidential and supportive environment where everyone has a shared experience.
So, whether you are just beginning the journey, or have many years experience, you are very welcome to join us. We can support and learn from each other!
From the parents of POD QLD.
The Challenge Games will be held in Townsville on 25 and 26 July 2012. Please put this in your Calendars. It is an excellent event that brings together students with disabilities from across a number of regions for two days of sports, fun and participation, and for some there is the serious side of representative competition. Your child's school should organise a team, and if not, you are
welcome to bring your child yourself. Students with hearing impairment compete against other children with hearing impairment.

The location was a hit too - yummy camp food. Hope to be back next year.

Family Auslan Only Weekend is designed for parents of Deaf or hard of hearing children.
After the diagnosis of a hearing loss in their child, many parents find it useful to talk with other parents who also have a child with a hearing loss. The Parent to Parent Program is a free service which connects families in the early days of diagnosis, with trained, paid Support Parents who are a bit further down the track and are available to share practical information, experiences, insights and/or emotional support.
Who is the program for?
Any family in Queensland who has a child with a permanent hearing loss from birth to completion of grade one.

It was recently announced by the government that a National Curriculum will be rolled out from 2013. Within the curriculum there are guidelines for a minimum amount of time that school students will be spending in class learning a second language.
Initially courses will be developed for Mandarin and Italian. However Auslan has been included in a list of languages that will have courses developed shortly after.
Great news for many kids.
